Mental Roy: The Fool
Roy 151 Major Arcana
This month's Mental Roy was to cover spurious predictions for the coming year. After a certain amount of discussion with the editors regarding Roy reading the future in his own guts, I felt that another approach might be better. Thus Mental Roy as a Tarot Card character was conceived. The Fool, of course, which coincidentally is the first of the Major Arcana, whatever that means.
For the purposes of the illustration I chose to closely follow the elements that appear in most Tarot depictions of the fool: the bag on a stick often associated with vagrant children, the flower in the hand meaning he’s a wannabe gardener, is looking for a girlfriend. What is usually a small dog taking a bite out of the seat of the fool's trousers is represented in this image by a small cat (for the sole reason that I already had a cat version of Roy and a deadline). Another common theme I have included from the cards is the headland, the end of which he is in danger of blindly walking over into the sea below, the moron.
Back to Backgrounds
I still can’t predict the future, but all told, it was an enjoyable exercise, giving me a chance to mess with different kinds of render and treatments for the final image. This led to an aged and 2D (yet 3D) look and feel. It's the first Roy in a while to be depicted on a background. Backgrounds started to get ditched in spring 2009 after the then art editor of 3DWorld, Richard Llewellyn, had grumbled that the backgrounds gave him less flexibility for the page layout.
